Back from Spring Break. Feels weird to be dropped right back into the school routine after being on the Big Island with Noa, family, and friends.

Had a phenomenal time on BI. Our Big Island Roots club volleyball team took third place in the Haili tournament. Our team had a great time competing together. I played libero, not really used to that position anymore, in fact its kind of boring compared to hitting!

Anyways, funs over and its back to school....

that means Thesis. O joy.

Only one more month of school till I graduate! yikes!

its freezing here!! Living in hawaii, i forgot what fall and winter are like. however, the changing colors of the leaves are beautiful. and its kind of fun to dress in 3 layers of clothes. we are now into our 2nd week of school in florence. this past weekend i had a couple friends visit, so we walked around florence and even toured the Duomo (the main cathedral in forence). its huge and you can see so far from the top! on sunday we went to pisa (a one hour train ride) to see the leaning tower, cool stuff. we have a midterm at the end of this week and a paper due soon enough so ill be hittin the books and the gym!!!

hola!!

spain is awesome!! me and april are enjoying our week break from school in barcelona and madrid...

we flew from pisa (itlay) to barcelona on tuesday and met up with our friend, cory from hawaii. he is here visiting friends that are studying in spain. we went out with them tuesday night and stayed in a nice hostel in the center of barcelona. wednesday we woke up early and went sight seeing, turns out i am a phenomenal tour guide! i took some great pictures with my camera that i cant wait to show you all!! we visited all the sights mainly built by the famous Gaudi. we visited many museums, monuments, a cathedral, and even the olympic stadium where the 1992 olympics were held.

wednesday nite we joined up with cory and his friends and went to a barcelona soccer game, which was WILD!

this morning was a little bit of a struggle, but we caught our plane to madrid and are staying with aprils friend at her apartment. emily is a professional waterpolo player from new zealand. she played for hawaii and also plays on the national team in N zealand. were going sight seeing tomarrow and will return to florence on saturday.

things are going great!
its been nothing but school this week. big papers to turn in. but ive gotten some site seeing in!
im looking forward to this weekend thogh. halloweens gonna be crazy! idk wat im gonna be yet??
theres a girl from hawaii whos studying in florence who i met through facebook though a friend...anyway shes never been to rome so im gonna take her around n get some site seeing in for myself at the same time. then in a couple weeks wen im in florence shes gonna take me around! its a 2way street!
next week is our last week in rome. which means finals! but im really looking forward to our break which comes up the week after, im going to barcelona and madrid, spain.
then school starts in florence!
im really looking forward to travel after school. paris, dublin, london, amsterdam, berlin, and munich!!! then its back to portand :( hahanah, im gonna be sad. but im really starting to miss hawaii and nao and the fam. i get back the 26th, theres a Blazers game on the 27th against toronto that id really like to see! i know kelley wants to go, but hopefully i can drag grandma youngberg along with me! i talked to grandma the other day, n she told me all about her new dog! im happy for her! good to hear from you aunt cindy!! hope to see u all soon!

we had our midterm yesterday (thursday, 24th). im pretty confident that i did well! not only do i stay awake in the 2 1/2 hours of class, but the material we are covering in class is really interesting! we are learning the history of the time periods between the late roman empire and the early renaissance! we also have some papers due in the near future. one paper im writing on the BLack Plague, and the other on a church that we took a class field trip too. The weekends have slowed down. more studying and site seeing, less party time. we get all excited wen we go new places, but its nice when things start to settle down. for my next break in early november, im traveling to Barcelona and Madrid! i have a friend from hawaii who will be there during that time, so ill get to meet up with him, his name is cory as well, and we can see the world!
on sunday im going to the vatican ealry in the morning. every last sunday of the month, its free admission and the pope comes out and walks around! then im going to a soccer game! the feature match of the year between the two rome rivals: lazio vs. Roma.
its like the civil war when these two teams play. very serious buisness here...
i bought my ticket today, and they came with brass knuckles ;) kidding.
anyways, all is good. ill give you an update soon (if im still alive after the soccer game)!

WOW,
it seems like the past few weeks have been nothing but GO-GO-GO! i guess thats what you must expect from a huge city like Rome...
school has been much more relaxed this month, however, we have a midterm on thursday, not even 2 weeks into class!! A 1250 word essay due next week, 5000 due the next week on top of a final, and 2500 words for our research project!! you get the picture...
however, i have gotten a chance to do some things ive been wanting to do. ive gotten to see the colosseum, the forum, pantheon, trevi fountain, etc. and got to travel back to tuscania and viterbo this past weekend because the italians had a birthday party for me! one of my friends, marco, who lives on a farm, slaughtered one of his pigs and we roasted it! everyone came and we told stories n drank wine and had a really good time!
i found out that i have internet in my house. well, not in my house but outside the window! so me and dan set our computers up in the windowsill and sit and type right next to each other!! its great because usually i have to go ALL the way to school to use internet which is a huge drag. transportation in rome sucks! it takes me 20 minutes to get to school! i have to walk 5 min to the metro, the a 10-12 min metro ride, and another 5 minute walk uphill to school. then walk up 3 flights of stairs! life sucks huh ;)
anyways, i better get started on those essays!!

Ciao everyone!
i have arrived in rome! its crazy here nothing but go-go-go. i got here on friday, and am rooming with dan again. we have an apartment in the ghetto. to get to school i have to walk to the metro, take the metro 8 stops to barbernini, then walk 5 min to school! kinda of a drag. however, once in the the center of the city, everything is within walking distance. the colosseum is my favorite! :) iv seen the pantheon, trevi fountain, the forum, the ancient roman ruins, mostly everything! i still havent seen the vatican...
the nightlife is rediculous, so many people from all over the world. ive met so many people and students.
this week is our one week off from school. ive been taking in rome but tomarrow (thursday, 9th) im traveling solo to naples. im gonna visit pompeii, sorrento, capri, and the amalfi coast, which is supposivley some of the most beautiful scenery in the world!

ROME on Friday! Here we come...

I thought study abroad classes were supposed to be easy??
no so much...
i just finished one of the most stressful days of my life. this past weekend i wrote a 2,500 page page for my history class on the colosseum, a 1,000 pg paper for my research paper on art in the middle ages. on top of studying for my italian language test and history test, AND preparing a presentation on my paper!!!
but...its over now!! thank god!
tomarrow is my last day in tuscania, before we head to rome. the school culinary class is hosting a farewell dinner for us. and my roommate and i are hosting a toga party tonight!!
tomarrow i plan on going to some of the places around tuscania that i havent been yet to take pics n wat not. also, tomarrow is our last day of ultimate frisbee!! its gonna be the grand finale!
once we get settled in rome, we have a one week break so i think me n april are gonna travel down to pompeii, naples, and into sicily!
this past weekend, we got to go to a freind (marco's) farm to pick grapes from his vineyard. it was an awesome exxperience! also the family cooked up a huge lunch for us! we then went to the river and to the etruscan tombs!!

Last Week in Tuscania :(

Its nearing the end of my phenomenal stay here in Tuscania. Its going to be sad leaving my freinds and "family" behind...
this week we had our midterms in history and italian. also we got to visit two museums, one in Tarquinia, and one here in Tuscania.
i started a ultimate frisbee compotition this week. all the students and some professors come down to the park and i organize a game of ultimate frisbee. those who dont play just watch and take pictures. but its super fun!! we came up with names for our teams and everyone has a blast and is always looking forward to when were playing next!!
this weekend is our last weekend in Tuscania, i have to study for finals on tuesday, while write a 2500 pg paper for my history class on top of a 1000 word paper for my research project. on sunday, however, our italian friends invited us to come pick grapes in his vineyard and also we are going to roast a pig! one last get together before we leave to Rome next week Friday :(
im excited for Rome, but the culture and laid back lifestyle will be missed...

just a little update...
things are going great here in Italy. The weather is starting to change, its raining more often and the mornings and evenings are chilly! no more surfshorts n slippers.
School is...well school. i thought school was gonna be a breeze, but i thought wrong. i have only 3 classes here in Tuscania. i will have 3 different classes when i go to rome and florence. My history class on ancient Greeks, Romans, & Etruscans is really interesting. learning about wat went on in the late B.C's and A.D is really interesting!! My itlaian language class is challenging for me, im not very good :( it sucks because since we are moving schools, they are trying to jam our heads full of too much info. i think we need to focus on the basics, get them engraved in our brain before moving on to the next steps...however, tuscania is a small town and everyone here speaks italian so it forces me to practice everyday. in the bigger cities like rome and florence, ill be able to get by with speaking English.
The lifestyle here is so much different than wat im used to. all the cars are tiny because gas is so expensive. there are alot of mopeds too. the roads are small and everyone drives crazy!! all stores have wats called "siesta", they open in the morning till 1, then they close till 4 or 5, and open back up till 8 or 9. there are two grocery stores here and they are both dirt cheap! if you dont have grocerys, your only other options are pizza, pastries, or a restaurant. everymorning i go to the caffe to get an expresso. the coffee (even though ive never even liked coffee), is very tasty. Mom would love it. in the caffes they also have a full bar. your allowed to freely drink anywhere at anytime. the ice cream is also delicious! the "gelatto" is homemade, and you can get a cone of amazing ice cream for 1euro.
My roomate, Dan is turning into a good friend. we pretty much do everything together. hes from new york, n we have alot of things in common. we have the nicest apartment of all the students and we each have our own rooms, except i have a king size bed n his is a single :) we also hang out with April (my travel buddy from Washington, who goes to UH) and Richard, who is a student from new york.
i bought a gym membership n have been "getting huge" as i say. but the pizza and alcohol doesnt help, i guess its just a balance. i go to the pizzaria in town everyday. weve made friends with the family that runs the place. i have especially made friends with Luana, the girl that works there ;) she occationally comes out with us on weekends n helps me with my italian homework!! she speaks good english...
tuscania is beautiful. i usually lift weights in the late evening around 6, then head down to the park n watch the sunset. its phenomenal. the park has comfy grass to lay in and overlooks the country side.

Croatia was phenomenal. Probably my favorite place so far because it reminds me so much of Hawaii. Beautiful beaches, interesting towns, and of course the ladies the LADIES! What made our stay especially entertaining was our hosts....
Aprils family-friends, Hakija and his 13 yr old son Ibro let us stay with them in thier "nice" apartment. It was 3 minutes walking distance to the beach, so most of time was spent there. They took us to sight see in the towns of Krk, Rijeka, and Opatija. Getting to see all these places is amazing! On Friday morning, the 29th of August, we took a bus to Triste, Italy. Then a 9 hour train to Rome. We met up with an advisor from Lorenzo Di Medici, our school, and we transfered to Tuscania; where we will be studying for the first month of our 3 cities!

August 27th, 2008...
My plane flight from Portland, OR to Amsterdam, Netherlands is 10 hours. i consumed abslute skyy vodka and 2 small bottles of wine while taking in 2 movies: Ironman and batman begins. the flight went by pretty fast! after a short wait in amsterdam, we flew 2 hours to Vienna, Austria. we were stuck in the airport with nowhere to go! it was at this point where i actually felt like a lost "traveler". we managed to find a hostel within reasonable taxi distance n unloaded there.

The hostel was one of the nicest around. myself n travel buddy, April, took in sites around the city of vienna and found a nice place to eat. later that nite we went to the bar @ the hostel where we met up with some random Americans who were traveling. the group of about 10 of us, roamed the city and enjoyed the night life!! at 5am, we snuggled into bed, only to wake up a few hours later to check out of the hostel and go explore the city!
with my new nikon camera, i was able to capture many of the sites vienna had to offer!

At 6pm on the 29th of august, we took off to croatia by bus!
